What I thought:

This is the first 'episode', or 'bookisode' in a new series from 711 Press. The books are very short - more like short stories than actual books - and they come out every Monday for 13 weeks. The books can all be read within an hour and are written as if the story were a tv show. This one is subtitled "Pilot" and although it would be easy to try and compare it to a prologue of a book, it really is more like a pilot from a tv show.

We meet Kayshawn, a teenage boy on the street about to be jumped by a gang. He manages to fight back but ends up getting really hurt and blacking out. When he wakes up he's in a hospital room with some mysterious people. They tell him they are a secret government agency and they know his secret - his ability to use electricity to fight back with. It turns out all these people have special abilities and they are all teens.

This was an enjoyable book filled with lots of action and foreshadowing that made me want to keep reading and not have it end as quickly as it did. The tension between Kayshawn and his new team mates was great and I'm sure will give the authors of the series interesting ways to write new scenes in future books. I liked learning about how the agency works and getting glimpses of the training in progress. I especially liked the weapon of choice - a manriki - by Kayshawn and am looking forward to seeing him in action in future bookisodes.

Overall, this was a fun read which left me wanting more. It was a short book that I was able to read within an hour, as promised, and will appeal to people of all ages. Although I am not ready to dive into the 5 star handouts quite yet, I expect this series to get better and better as it progresses through the “season”.
