Interview with Kelly Beltz, author of Beyond the Stars

Today we have a special guest, author Kelly Beltz for an interview. I reviewed Kelly's first book Beyond the Stars: Kataria earlier this week (click the link to read my thoughts).

Welcome to the blog! It’s so nice to have you here today.

Thank you for having me.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

I’m a mom of two girls, two dogs, a wife, a nurse anesthetist, and started writing because I love it. Reading is one of my favorite things to do. I usually read as I watch television so I can finish all the books I want to read. I also like to knit, paint, and take long walks with my dogs and family, even when it’s cold. You should see my selection of hats!

What inspired you to write your story?

The books are inspired by the Space race happening today. I even got permission to use the Space Island Group, a real company working on future Space tourism, as my protagonist’s employer. I wanted the story to seem as realistic as possible so the reader could image themselves traveling into Space and discovering the secret alien alliance as Samantha does.

How did you come up with the title?

In Beyond the Stars: Kataria, I didn’t have a title until my heroine’s love interest, Gaelan, confides in her that his planet is “just beyond those stars”. It was at that moment, I fell in love with him and the possibility of a world similar to ours in our very own galaxy, hence the title.

What is the best writing advice you can give?

Love what you write because you will spend a lot of time re-living the material in your head.

How did you choose the genre you write in?

I like stories that are paranormal or sci-fi because they not only take you into another reality, they usually incorporate some mystery and romance in them as well. Sci-fi seems to create natural conflict because it coincides with science and technology, where there’s always a risk of danger or misuse. It also enables you to push the limits to what your characters can do. Now that’s fun!

What gives your book an edge? What about the story is going to have the reader on the edge of his/her seat?

I think it’s easy to identify with Samantha. Who wouldn’t have anxiety about leaving the Earth, be worried they’d never return, and be terrified of bad aliens?

Are you a person who makes their bed in the morning, or do you not see much point?

If you count tugging on my puffy comforter that straightens with one pull, then yes.

If you were trapped on a deserted island, what three items would you want to have with you?

A hot man with survivor instincts who adores me, a water purifier and a solar powered radio.

Your favourite episode of your favourite tv show?

My all time favorite shows are Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Dr. Who and Star Trek.

What was the best thing before sliced bread?

Pasta. I practically live on it!

Thank you, Kelly! Find out more about her books below:
